We talk a lot about MTHFR with our patients.

MTHFR is a gene variation. It is relatively common and often not commonly talked about. We see some common symptoms in our patients.


MTHFR stands for methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase, an enzyme which plays a crucial role in the body's methylation process.


What is Methylation? It is a biochemical process essential for various physiological functions, including DNA synthesis, repair, and regulation, as well as the metabolism of certain hormones, neurotransmitters, and toxins.


Why is this so important? If you cannot breakdown B Vitamins efficiently this can lead to some major health consequences such as;

  • Fatigue

  • Migraines

  • Mental Health Issues - Anxiety, depression

  • Elevated Homocysteine Levels

  • Cardiovascular Issues

  • Neural Tube Defects in Pregnancy

  • Sleep disfunction

  • General lack of pep

The two main players in MTHFR:

Folate (B9) is a crucial B vitamin in the context of MTHFR. Lack of Folate (in the correct form) can lead to anemia, gastrointestinal symptoms, fatigue and weakness, mood changes, cognitive impairment and elevated homocysteine levels.


Vitamin B12 is also indirectly linked to MTHFR. Low B12 can result in the same symptoms as above, also soreness of the mouth, tongue or sores in the mouth. Another symptom can be vision problems and in severe cases can lead to optic nerve damage.


If MTHFR is suspected: There are genetic DNA test kits that can be ordered online. Or a genetic healthcare provider can do a test. This is pretty pricey but does give a definitive result.


Alternatively, we do a ‘trial of care’ for patients we suspect need some B Vitamin help. These will often ‘kick in’ after a few days. People have reported feeling amazing, some saying it has been life changing for them (they clearly have the MTHFR gene!)
